Vault 111
Vault 111 was constructed to observe the effects of long-term cryogenic stasis on unsuspecting test subjects. (most of whom were residents the nearby town of Sanctuary Hills). Due to the nature of this experiment, the Vault was assigned only a small crew of scientists and guards. The staff were only supplied for 180 days, with directions to evacuate upon receiving an all-clear signal from Vault-Tec or after the initial 180 days from when the bombs fell. After evacuation of staff, the test subjects were to be monitored remotely by the company.
However, as the staff soon discovered, no all-clear signal was forthcoming. As supplies dwindled, the vault's security team led a mutiny against the Overseer, planning to open the vault door and escape. The Overseer states in his logs that opening the Vault door 180 days after a nuclear detonation would be certain death and refused to comply with the demands. The Overseer then locked himself in his office with a few other Vault-Tec scientists, ordering everyone to hand over their weapons, medicine and food supplies by the end of the day or there 'would be consequences.' The Security team rushed the Overseer's office with intentions of battling their way out of the vault.
The ensuing firefight killed many, and any survivors presumably left the vault. The fate of these men and women is unknown, although it is highly likely that they died soon after leaving. The test subjects, frozen in their pods, remained untouched for over a century.
To keep the subjects unsuspecting they were told that they must place their jumpsuits on and step inside the pods to be decontaminated in order to enter the lower levels
